The summer we deserve is finally here, and didn't it just keep us waiting! This time of year the weather is perfect, the evenings last forever so time is no issue, owning a horse seems an absolute joy and not a chore.

If you are looking for something different to do with your horse now you have got some extra time why not have a whirl at horse agility?

Here's 5 reasons why you should give it a go:

  • It is a great way to develop a bond with your horse.

Agility is a fun way to meet new challenges together and build on your horse's trust in you.

  • It really improves a horse's confidence out hacking and meeting new objects

Agility is all about navigating various different obstacles such as walking over tarpaulins, going through tunnels and interacting with unusual object. Meeting all these potentially scary things in a nice, calm way with you on foot builds a great base for when you are out riding.

  • It is great exercise for both of you

Agility can be done in walk, trot and canter and is suitable for horses with mild arthritis or horses that are unable to be ridden much but need to keep moving. Jogging round the school or field is a great way to improve your fitness too.

  • It is a great social opportunity

If you enjoy it you can join the horse agility club and get involved with lots of competitions and online forums and meet lots of new people.

  • It is something a bit different to try

It is easy to get stuck in a rut and horses get bored just as easily as we do. This is a great way to work on obedience and get horses moving without being the same old schooling exercises. Agility is fun for the handler AND the horse.
