Jo Browne, Editor
Jo has been riding all her life, and has owned 15.3hh, 15-year-old part-Thoroughbred mare Bella for seven years. Due to working in London and being the mum of two young girls, Jo keeps Bella on the family farm in Worcestershire, hacking out at weekends and enjoying the odd local show. Jo has worked on Horse magazine for a total of eight years.
Sarah Jenkins, Deputy Editor
Sarah boarded a pony for the first time aged 10. Eighteen years later, she still has the 13.2hh grey her long-suffering non-horsey parents bought her. Said pony is now happily retired, but Sarah continues to bankrupt herself with her two lovely IDxTB mares, doing as much riding and competing as time and money permit. She worked for Olympic gold medallist Leslie Law for a year after school – just to establish she would never hack it with the big boys – then, following uni, spent six happy years working for Horse's sister weekly title Horse & Hound. At Horse, Sarah is predominantly responsible for features, as well as looking after the website and social media. Any thoughts or suggestions, do drop her an email on the link above – she'd be thrilled to hear from you.
Garry Ashton-Coulton, Art Editor
Garry was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of equestrianism by a horse-obsessed girlfriend, who is now his horse-obsessed wife. He has worked on Horse for almost eight years, and is now a fixture in the office. He sometimes wonders if Horse is trying to get rid of him, or planning to claim on a hidden insurance policy, as every remotely dangerous activity gets thrown Garry's way – he's had to contend with jousting, galloping along cliff edges in Spain, roughing it in the wilds of Transylvania, and dodgy food on a day trip to the New Forest. He gets his own back on his colleagues by cycling into work and subjecting everyone to the sight of his knees encased in lycra tights.
Joanna Ryan, Sub Editor
Jo's love of horses started when her parents took her for her first riding lesson at the age of seven, and grew throughout her childhood as she progressed from lessons to riding a very cheeky Welsh Section A. Following her early teens in the Pony Club, she spent several happy years hacking her family's hunter. She found a new equestrian obsession at university when she joined the polo club, competing in the SUPA winter tournament. After two years on a shooting magazine, Jo joined Horse as sub editor in February 2011 – reading about horses from nine to five helps to keep her sane during the times when she can't get out of the city to ride!
Eve Jones, Picture Researcher
Eve moved to the countryside at the age of six, and as the daughter of the least horsey people imaginable, has always had to beg, steal or borrow horses to ride. On the whole, this resulted in a fairly Thelwell-esque nature to her mounts — something that has not altered much in later life. Not really one for pirouettes and half passes, Eve prefers watching point-to-points and holding on for dear life out hunting. With a background in fine art, her passion for both pictures and ponies has proved a rather fitting combination in her new role as Picture Researcher at Horse.
Tessa Smyth, Editorial Assistant and Products Editor
Tessa grew up on a farm and has ridden for as long as she can remember. She has competed in every discipline – but particularly enjoys eventing – is a regular on the hunting field and an avid race goer. Her lack of horsey parentage didn't limit her determination to ride as much as she could — regularly missing out on family holidays to ride or go to Pony Club (whenever she could get a lift)! She went to university in Edinburgh, but kept up her riding (and her sanity) by being a work rider at a National Hunt yard. She worked in sales and marketing at a racecourse before landing her ideal job at Horse magazine.
