HORSE Magazine

Meet the Horse Magazine team

Thursday 16 October 2008

Jo Browne, Editor
Jo has been riding all her life, and has owned 15.3hh, 15-year-old part-Thoroughbred mare Bella for seven years. Due to working in London and being the mum of one-year-old Emily, Jo keeps Bella on the family farm in Worcestershire, hacking out at weekends and enjoying the odd local show. Jo has worked on Horse magazine for a total of eight years.

Victoria Spicer, Deputy Editor
Victoria didn't get much choice about whether she liked horses or not – her first pony arrived three months before she did. She grew up competing in dressage, showing, and every single Pony Club discipline imaginable, and remains the proud owner of an ex-racehorse, who is now 20 and living in blissful semi-retirement in Scotland. After graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in English Literature, Victoria moved to London to work for Horse & Hound. After three years, she moved to Horse magazine to be Deputy Editor in June 2007.

Garry Ashton-Coulton, Art Editor
Garry was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of equestrianism by a horse-obsessed girlfriend, who is now his horse-obsessed wife. He has worked on Horse for almost eight years, and is now a fixture in the office. He sometimes wonders if Horse is trying to get rid of him, or planning to claim on a hidden insurance policy, as every remotely dangerous activity gets thrown Garry's way – he's had to contend with jousting, galloping along cliff edges in Spain, roughing it in the wilds of Transylvania, and dodgy food on a day trip to the New Forest. He gets his own back on his colleagues by cycling into work and subjecting everyone to the sight of his knees encased in lycra tights.

Jennie Hughes, Sub Editor
Jennie's obsession with horses began as a small child with an impressive collection of My Little Ponies, which naturally led to pestering her parents for a real pony. Little did they realise this meant spending vast amounts of their time towing an assortment of equines to local shows and pony club. Sadly, she no longer owns a horse, but lives in hope that one will turn up on Christmas morning. After graduating from Leicester University with a law degree, Jennie decided that legal life was not for her. After starting her publishing career in legal and financial magazines, Jennie joined Horse as Sub Editor in July 2008. Spending all day thinking about horses, but avoiding mud and muck heaps, is her dream come true.

Beatrice Asprey, Editorial Assistant/Products Editor
When Bea was first put on a friend's pony at a very young age, she immediately took to life in the saddle, much to her parents' horror. From that day on she became a fully fledged equi-brat, dragging her poor mother and horses around the country to every Pony Club, BSJA and hunter trial in the vicinity of the M25. Her horse, Captain, now enjoys a much more leisurely pace of life, hacking and occasionally jumping. Having graduated from Exeter University with a history degree, and spent six months travelling, Bea arrived at Horse magazine, where she looks after all products editorial, competitions, as well as the Horse World and diary dates pages.

Caroline Anstee, Picture Editor
Caroline can still remember her very first riding lesson at the tender age of five, and from that moment, she was hooked. Growing up, she was involved in all aspects of Pony Club, particularly gymkhana, however her tastes became a bit more refined when she got a bit older and turned her attention to dressage. Caroline was lucky enough to own a gorgeous schoolmistress, spending almost every weekend competing with her until university got in the way and riding had to take a back seat. After graduating with a degree in photography, Caroline confesses that she was over the moon to start work at Horse in June 2008 – the perfect way to combine her two great loves, photography and horses.

Aysha Shakil, Designer
Aysha had worked on a whole range of different titles before she joined the Horse team in 2006. This is her first role on an equestrian magazine, and she has since learned plenty about horses, without ever having sat on one! Things have recently changed on that front though, when the Horse team arranged for Aysha to have a riding lesson as part of the National Riding Festival in May, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
