Jump off

Thursday 9 October 2008

The key to success in a jump-off isn't just about speed. Throwing caution to the wind and going at a gallop can result in poles falling and seconds ticking by as you struggle to steer around turns. So how do you master the art of winning a jump-off?

Riders who win are more likely to take the shortest route between the start and the finish, keeping their horse in a good rhythm and saving precious time by making economical turns and jumping fences on an angle. This approach means you have more control over the horse, an increased chance of accuracy and are less likely to pick up faults.

Although getting a clear in the first round is priority, it can pay to think about the jump-off course well in advance so you can plan your strategy. If the class is being run as 'two-phase', you will need to jump off straight after your first round. The benefit of two-phase classes is that your horse will go into the jump-off in a nice rhythm but it's a real test of your memory.

To bring you the best advice on how to successfully negotiate a jump-off course, we asked leading trainers and riders for their top tips.

“Play to your horse's strengths and weaknesses. Make a note of which fences he likes best. If he prefers an oxer to an upright, you may need to ride a wider line into the verticals, but can turn tighter into spreads.”
John Whitaker

“The winner is not the rider who goes the fastest around the course – it's the person who takes the most economical route.”
Geoff Billington

“Use your legs to guide the horse around – don't just 'steer' with your hands.
As you jump one fence, you should already have your eyes focused on the
next jump, because this causes a slight shift in your body position. Your horse will feel this movement of your weight, so as he lands he will know where he is going next.”
Di Lampard
